Puppy Teething Toys
All dogs mouth and chew. Mouthing is a normal part of puppy play and just like a baby, your dog receives lots of valuable information about the items in his surrounding by placing them in his mouth. However, without the proper direction, mouthing and chewing can quickly become painful and destructive, turning your companion into an uncontrollable nuisance, which is why early intervention is absolutely critical when it comes to training.
When puppies play with one another or with mom, they're alerted to a painful bite with a yelp. This causes them to stop, and you can use this inherent instinct to begin your training. When your puppy moves those sharp teeth away from his toy and to your feet, hands or face, make a startling sound (like a yelp) to deter him. In time, he'll learn that his teeth hurt you, and he'll stop. However, if he doesn't get the message after a handful of times in a single play session, it may simply be time for a time out.
Be sure you redirect your puppy toward an appropriate chew toy each time he's out of line; having a variety of interesting and high-quality toys at your disposal will ensure he won't get bored as quickly. By offering redirection, you're teaching him about all of the fun ways he can play and earn attention without nipping at you. While puppy's teething times will vary slightly, he'll soon begin to grow out of his mouthy behavior once his puppy teeth are replaced by adult teeth, around four months of age. Make it a goal to implement and follow through on your bite training before this time, as it'll be much more difficult (and painful) to control your dog's mouthy behavior once his big teeth are in.
